Common application essay – what experience is the most affective in your life?

Being a leader of his or her group is a very exciting experience. Not only group’s success and failure is decided by leader’s ability, leader should take a responsibility to the group’s success and failure although leader does not intend to do so. People in a group depend on their leader when they face severe adversity although their leader has no ability to overcome the problem. Leader in a group should predict all the situations and maintain his group well. Leader cannot give his responsibility to other people, and must not do so.
When I became a representative of my international department for Daeil Hanmadang, I was so excited that I did not notice how difficult to do well as a leader. I just think about former representatives of my department who are respected. I, however, found that being a leader means constant sacrificing for the members.
There are many things to do which leader should prepare. I should check all the sizes of my department to buy department T-shirts. To buy T-shirts, I should go to Dong Dae Moon for many times and visit all the stores selling the T-shirts to buy the T-shirts at the lowest price. Not only buying, but also designing the T-shirts is tiring job. Because before my term International department students wore red T-shirts without mark, they wanted to wear new T-shirts with characteristic mark. To think over the mark, I and my friends ceaselessly drew the mark which was the most expressive.
However, the most difficult job is to do all these jobs with preparing AP tests. Before I worked for Deail Hanmadang, I did not study exhaustively and just thought that cracking before the test was enough. My laziness had me give up one of two jobs and I finally spoiled the AP tests. Working as a leader was too responsible to give up. I did not want to mar fantastic festival because of me.
At last, the day was come and I did my best for my department’s winning. My throat was too pricked to speak any words because of cheering, and a body was about to frustrated. International department students gained their power to win the game, and all the people became one. After all, international department was rewarded a cheering award. Though we could not No.1 award, we could be International department itself by Daeil Hanmadang. As a leader of my department, I gained unexpressive things in my life.
Someone can say that I am fool because I gave up the AP tests which I could take just one time in a year. I also often regretted to study hastily due to preparing Daeil Hanmadang. However, being a leader of my department was invaluable experience to my life. It made me more grow up than before, and speculate about my group, my friends, and myself. I grew up through this tiring but meaningful experience.

Nowadays, I am reading a book ‘Oliver Twist’, written by Charles Dickens. By this book, Charles Dickens depicted a dark aspect of 18th industrial era in U.K. Oliver, who is the main character, is orphan and is delivered to one man who is undertaker. During the stay with the undertaker, Oliver finds many unfair scenes in the world. But, he is just a young boy so he has no power to change this unreasonable world.
Industrialization gives human many convenient changes in human’s world. People can live in the house with warm water in winter, turn on the air conditioner when they are hot. They eat what they want at any circumstance if they have enough money. People in primitive society could not even imagine these conveniences which modern people enjoy. When the development, however, became overheated, the development which made people convenient now makes people inconvenient.
To get more than others, people now become busy and tired. They just concentrate on gaining good result and do not focus on making a fair process. They even use tricks and unfair means to be winners. Socially weak people are not protected well. The weak are only considered as a looser in society. Because of the industrialization which makes people happy, now people do not live happy life rather than people in primitive society in which human themselves ceaselessly tried to escape.

Journal Entry # 1 Mr. Roh’s way to express himself

Mr. Roh, who is a president of Korea, is known for his direct and frank speaking way. His own speaking habits such as tone, and intonation express Mr. Roh’s characteristic. His frankness, boldness in expressing his opinion, and amateurism can be seen definitely by his way to speak. Some people like his speech way, but others do not like his way to speech.
Go Eun, famous resistant poet in Korea, referred Mr. Roh’s way to speak. Go Eun said Mr. Roh’s speaking way is clear, logical, and straightforward, but his way to speak does not suit to that of president. He said that people in high position should be dignified at every circumstance. He said that especially, president, who is at the highest position in the nation, should speak or express his opinion gracefully because his words can affect others seriously.
People often say that frankness can be a very useful solution to find the way to solve the problem. They think that expressing their thought obviously can show their true intent. It, however, can only hurt their meanings. People hearing others’ frank words can misunderstand speakers’ meaning because listeners can consider speakers’ frankness as impertinence. Furthermore, Mr. Noh should have graceful manner in speech because his position can influence many things seriously.
